maybe it's a good thing...

that i've lost my obsessive compulsive edge lately when it comes to work...
sure, i haven't been cleaning out the inbox full of papers as quickly as i usually do but i have been getting sleep, eating and relaxing. i know that these were my personal goals for this year but it still makes me feel restless and occasionally anxious. speaking of which, i am going to finish this episode of dexter and stare at some grade 9 assessments futilely.

why my job is ok...

decided to start a running list of hilarious/ endearing/ silly/ 'really?!?' moments involving my students... didn't do it last year and am starting to regret it. will update here and there... will be dated when possible.

really?!
Grade 12 Senior Boy:
Ms. Perreca, maybe you'll find a husband in this class

hilarious
Ms. Perreca: So, we know that the pearl causes people to be envious and violent? What other evil things is the Pearl associated with?
Grade 9 Freshmen Girl: [thinking and muttering under breath] Poor people?

endearing - 10/2
Ms. Perreca: Ok, I want to hear from someone who hasn't participated yet today [looks over to the only student who hadn't spoken yet]
Grade 9 Freshmen Girl: [averts eyes and looks fixedly at the door but breaks look and make eye contact for a split second and hurriedly goes back to examining the door]
Ms. Perreca: I'm really good at eye contact, by the way
Grade 9 Freshmen Girl: [laughs nervously]
Ms. Perreca: I'll call on you after I take Markus' comment, ok?
Grade 9 Freshmen Girl [participates twice of own volition]

hilarious - 10/1
Grade 9 Freshmen Boy: [breaks into rap in the middle of class during a discussion lull] In West Philadelphia born and raised, on the playground is where i spent most of my days
Ms. Perreca [stares at student]
Grade 9 Freshmen Boy: [pauses for a moment and then...] chilling out max
Ms. Perreca & Grade 9 Freshmen Boy: [in perfect unison] and relaxing all cool and all shooting some b-ball out side of the school
Ms. Perreca & Grade 9 Freshmen Boy & 50% of the Class: when a couple of guys who were up to no good started making trouble in my neighborhood
Ms. Perreca & Grade 9 Freshmen Boy & 100% of the Class: I got in one little fight and my mom got scared she said 'you're movin' with you auntie and uncle in Bel Air"
